The READY report
The National Deaf Children’s Society’s post-16 research project called Recording Emerging Adulthood in Deaf Youth (READY), is being carried out by the Universities of Manchester and Edinburgh. The research has established a cohort of over 150 deaf young people, with the aim of better understanding the risk factors and protective factors as they transition through to adulthood. The year 2 READY report is now available and includes new evidence in the areas of language and communication, social networks, health, wellbeing and self-determination. The findings are available in English and BSL.
Disabled people five times more likely to experience food poverty
The Food Foundation has published new research highlighting a sharp increase in the number of people experiencing food insecurity, up from 7.3% of households to 8.8% – or 4.7 million adults in the UK. Food insecurity means being unable to afford food and as a result having smaller meals than usual, skipping meals; being hungry but not eating because of food costs, or not eating for a whole day. Disabled people are highlighted as one of the groups most affected, being 5 times more likely to be at risk from food insecurity compared to non-disabled people.
Barrier-free nationwide biking and strolling
Cycling charity Sustrans has launched a masterplan for a UK-wide visitors and barrier-free nationwide biking and strolling network (NCN) appropriate for “a sensible 12-year-old travelling alone”. They want to link most towns with safe routes accessible for walking as well as bikes and wheelchairs.

Chief medical officers’ recommendations on disabled children’s exercise
Disabled children and young people should get 20 minutes of exercise each day and strength and balance activity three times a week in the first-ever physical activity guidelines released for them by the four chief medical officers in the UK.
