Paramedics could not tell deaf Derby widow her husband had died

A deaf woman is calling for ambulance crews to learn basic sign language after paramedics were unable to tell her that her husband had died. Elizabeth Corbett was at work when she received a distressed video call from her children to say her husband David, 51, had fallen ill. By the time she got home, paramedics had arrived but could not explain to Mrs Corbett what had happened.

Ilkeston disco for disabled adults grows into key social event

A monthly disco which started as a gathering for a handful of friends has become a key social event for disabled people, its organiser has said. Vicky Johnson started hosting small additional needs discos at the function room she runs, in Ilkeston in Derbyshire, so her music-loving son Regan could be a DJ six years ago.

New to Nature employment scheme

New to Nature will offer new, full-time, temporary work placements in nature and landscape organisations across the UK, aiming to increase diversity and enrich the environmental sector. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee, the programme will run until May 2024 and will provide paid work placements for at least 70 people, targeting young people from diverse backgrounds to undertake a range of environmental roles.
