The quiet dangers of electric vehicles for the blind and partially sighted
The government should introduce tougher regulations on electric vehicles because of dangers to visually impaired people, a sight loss charity has said. A study published in May by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found pedestrians are twice as likely to be hit by an electric or hybrid vehicle than a petrol or diesel car, rising to three times in urban areas.
New Lego characters aim to represent hidden disabilities such as autism
Lego is introducing several characters who wear sunflower lanyards to its brick universe for the first time to raise awareness of a badge worn to indicate someone has a hidden disability such as autism. The company says it hopes sunflower lanyard will help people ‘embrace diversity, value inclusivity and remove stigma’.

Comedian Chris McCausland, Strictly Come Dancing’s first blind contestant, has been crowned this year’s winner. The 47-year-old beat JLS singer JB Gill, actress Sarah Hadland and former Love Islander Tasha Ghouri to lift the glitterball trophy in Saturday’s live final on BBC One.

Down’s syndrome charity’s cafe saved from closure
A Down’s syndrome charity has said it can keep its cafe open after a successful fundraising drive. Sunshine and Smiles in Leeds had been at risk of having to cut services and shut the cafe, which employs 10 young people with the condition.
