16-year-old left petrified after a fire broke out in his school and he was left in the building
Sixteen-year-old Lucas Vezza‑O’Brien, who uses an electric wheelchair, was forced to stay alone on the upper floor of his school during a recent fire. First responders lacked the equipment, such as evacuation chairs, to bring him down safely. Traumatised by the experience, Lucas has now launched a campaign urging schools to improve safety planning for disabled students by ensuring properly equipped evacuation procedures are in place.
Disabled people frustrated by driving lessons wait
Disabled people are facing long waits for driving lessons due to a lack of instructors with suitable cars. According to the Association of Disability Driving Instructors (ADDI), less than 1% of the 39,500 driving instructors in the UK have specially adapted vehicles which can be used by those with additional needs.

Improved PE and sport for more than 240,000 pupils with SEND
Hundreds of thousands of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are set to benefit from a national programme to improve access to PE and school sports. Backed by an initial £300,000 for the first year, the Inclusion 2028 programme will work with a network of 50 Youth Sport Trust lead schools to provide expert training to teachers to help them create and deliver lessons that meet the diverse needs of all pupils – including those with physical, sensory, cognitive, communication or social and emotional needs.
